North Carolina head coach Bill Belichick knows his Tar Heels will have their hands full when No. 3 Notre Dame comes to Chapel Hill on Saturday.
During an interview with UNC play by play announcer Jones Angell, Belichick spoke highly of the Fighting Irish and the challenge they present on both sides of the football. Notre Dame enters the matchup unbeaten and coming off a dominant 49-10 victory over Purdue, while North Carolina is looking to rebound from a 28-20 loss to Clemson.
Belichick pointed to Notre Dame’s overall consistency as one of the biggest challenges for his team.
“They’re a good football team obviously…they’re undefeated and have been pretty impressive in all their wins, particularly two of them where they had 35-0 at halftime. They don’t make many mistakes and make you earn everything…They’re sound all the way across the board,” Belichick said.
The legendary coach specifically highlighted Notre Dame’s defense, noting that the Irish have been effective at limiting big plays and forcing opposing offenses to consistently earn their yards.
“Defensively, they haven’t given up much. They don’t give up many good plays,” Belichick said.
But Belichick isn’t overlooking Notre Dame’s offense, either. He described the Irish as an explosive unit capable of creating problems quickly, particularly with their collection of running backs and receivers.
Notre Dame has been one of the more productive teams in the country through the opening portion of the season, and Belichick said the Tar Heels will have to be prepared for a team that can score points and play at a fast pace.
“They score a lot of points and they play fast,” Belichick said.
Despite the strength of the opponent, Belichick stressed that North Carolina’s preparation ultimately has to remain focused on what the Tar Heels can control.
“It’s the same every week,” Belichick said. “Our performance is always about us. We have to be aware of who we’re playing and what their tendencies are.”
That approach will be particularly important for North Carolina after the Tar Heels struggled offensively against Clemson.
For Notre Dame, Saturday represents another opportunity to continue building momentum toward its postseason goals. For North Carolina, it’s a chance to make a statement against one of the nation’s top-ranked teams.
Belichick isn’t pretending the challenge is an easy one. But his message heading into Saturday is clear: respect Notre Dame, understand its tendencies, and execute at a high level.
On the flip side of this, Marcus Freeman and Notre Dame as a team can’t take North Carolina lightly by looking past them. Instead, they must do as Marcus Freeman says, “Leave No Doubt on the moment in front of you.”
