Jonaz Walton didn’t just have a good afternoon in Chapel Hill on Saturday, the Notre Dame freshman running back announced himself as a legitimate force in the Irish backfield and has a great case to be the number one running game going forward.
In wet and challenging conditions against North Carolina, freshman running back Walton turned in a breakout performance that could prove to be an important moment in his development. He carried the ball 23 times, while producing 120 yards on the ground, and contributing two catches for 28 yards.
Walton averaged 5.9 yards per touch, providing Notre Dame with a physical presence and big-play ability when the offense needed it most
But the numbers only tell part of the story.
Walton became a major factor for the Irish coming out of halftime. He ran for 61 yards on 12 carries in the third quarter, giving Notre Dame a much-needed spark after North Carolina immediately erased the deficit with a kickoff return touchdown, making it a 21-20 game.
The Irish answered by putting together extended possessions that drained valuable time off the clock, with Walton playing a central role in keeping the offense moving and helping Notre Dame reestablish control.
The performance also put Walton in some impressive Notre Dame company.
He became the first Notre Dame freshman running back to rush for 100 yards in a game since Chris Tyree accomplished the feat against Florida State in 2020. More broadly, Walton now joins an exclusive group of Notre Dame freshmen since 1995 to record a 100-yard rushing game, alongside Chris Tyree, Josh Adams, Tarean Folston, Robert Hughes and Darius Walker.
The freshman’s emergence comes at an important time for Notre Dame. The Irish entered the season with plenty of questions surrounding the running back room, but Walton’s performance against North Carolina showed that he has the ability to become much more than a complementary piece.
His combination of vision, patience and physical running was on full display Saturday. He repeatedly found ways to turn routine carries into meaningful gains and helped Notre Dame control the game when it mattered most.
Notre Dame walked out of Chapel Hill with a 37-26 victory, remaining unbeaten and extending its winning streak to 15 games.
But for Walton, the biggest takeaway has to be a breakout performance on the road and a place in Notre Dame freshman history while giving him the ultimate confidence that he can indeed play at a high level on the big stage.
And a pretty clear message was given to the rest of college football today:
Jonaz Walton has arrived!
