Marcus Freeman Weekly Conference Recap (BYU)

Notre Dame is coming off one of its most complete performances of the season, and Marcus Freeman believes the way his team handled Stanford offers plenty of positives to carry into the next week.
The Fighting Irish defeated the Cardinals 58–7, producing an impressive offensive showing while limiting Stanford’s opportunities to generate momentum. Notre Dame also benefited from contributions across the roster, including opportunities for younger players to demonstrate their readiness.
Now, the focus shifts to BYU. The upcoming trip to Provo presents a different challenge, and Freeman knows his team must put together another productive week of preparation before taking the field.
During his press conference, Freeman discussed what stood out against Stanford, where the offense and defense performed well, and why he welcomes the opportunity to compete in a new environment.
A Complete Team Effort Against Stanford
For Freeman, Saturday’s result was about more than the final score. He was encouraged by how Notre Dame performed in front of its home crowd and the way the team approached the contest.
“I thought the guys played well on Saturday. It was a great environment. It’s always good to be home with our home fans and students. It’s special.”
One of the defining aspects of Notre Dame’s performance was its ability to create opportunities on both sides of the football. The offense avoided giving away possessions, while the defense generated takeaways that helped the Irish add to their scoring total.
Freeman believes that the relationship between the two units has been an important part of the team’s recent play.
“I really thought our team did a good job of protecting the football on offense and taking it away on defense and turning those turnovers into points is crucial and it’s a reflection of the complementary football I think right now they are playing with.”
The ability to capitalize on defensive takeaways can change the direction of a game. Against Stanford, Notre Dame took advantage of those opportunities and continued to build its lead.
That kind of execution will be important as the Irish prepare for a tougher test away from home.
Younger Players Provide Encouraging Signs
A sizable lead also gave Notre Dame an opportunity to put younger players into the game. Although those players may not receive as many snaps during closer contests, their contributions remain important to the team’s overall development.
Freeman liked what he saw from the players who entered later in the contest, particularly their ability to follow the game plan and execute their assignments.
“I was really pleased with those younger guys that got a chance to play later in the game, who don’t always get those opportunities. They did a really good job of executing the game plan and being efficient on both sides of the ball.”
Those opportunities give younger players experience in a game setting and allow the coaching staff to evaluate their progress. Developing dependable options throughout the roster can also become increasingly important as injuries and the demands of the season affect personnel.
Notre Dame will need players at every level to remain prepared, and the work of its younger contributors against Stanford was a positive development.
Offensive Execution Starts Up Front
Notre Dame found success through both the passing game and the ground attack, giving the offense multiple ways to keep Stanford’s defense under pressure.
Freeman was particularly pleased with the unit’s ability to protect the quarterback and control the line of scrimmage. He also highlighted how the offense responded to the different defensive looks Stanford presented.
“I thought on offense we threw the ball well, ran the ball well, protected our quarterback, and really controlled the line of scrimmage, which was crucial, and they handled the multiple looks they were giving us.”
Winning up front creates opportunities for an offense to operate with greater consistency. Effective blocking can open running lanes, provide the quarterback with time, and help an offense stay on schedule.
Notre Dame demonstrated that balance against Stanford, and Freeman will be looking for the same attention to detail as the Irish prepare for BYU.
The next matchup will require the offense to recognize its assignments, protect the football and execute regardless of the defensive looks it encounters.
Defense Makes Stanford Work for Every Opportunity
Holding an opponent to seven points requires consistent execution, and Freeman credited Notre Dame’s defense for its work against Stanford.
The Irish were effective at limiting scoring opportunities and getting off the field on third down, preventing the Cardinals from sustaining drives throughout the contest.
“On defense, to hold anyone to 7 points is a challenge. I thought they did an excellent job of doing that and getting off the field…I thought they played well and did a good job of executing on 3rd down and getting off the field.”
Third-down performance is an important measure of defensive efficiency because it determines whether an opponent can extend a possession or give the ball back to the offense.
Notre Dame’s ability to force stops helped keep Stanford from establishing a rhythm. The defense also contributed to the turnover production that
Freeman identified as a major factor in the team’s performance.
The challenge now is maintaining that standard against a new opponent with a different offensive approach.
BYU Presents a Different Test
The Stanford victory is in the books, but Notre Dame cannot spend too much time looking backward. Freeman knows the team must quickly redirect its attention toward BYU and the work required to prepare for the upcoming matchup.
When discussing the challenge ahead, Freeman placed the emphasis squarely on the week leading up to kickoff.
“It’s gonna be a great challenge. It’s gonna be about our preparation and how we prepare, and we have got to have a great week.”
That message reflects the importance of the details that take place before game day. Film study, practice execution, and preparation for an opponent’s personnel all contribute to a team’s ability to perform when the stakes rise.
Notre Dame will need to build on its performance against Stanford while identifying the areas that require additional work. A convincing victory can provide momentum, but it does not eliminate the need for improvement.
Freeman’s priority is ensuring the Irish are ready for the specific challenges BYU will present.
Freeman Welcomes the Opportunity to Play in Provo
Notre Dame’s trip to Provo will bring a new setting for the program, but Freeman made it clear that the unfamiliar environment is not something he wants his players to fear.
Instead, he views these opportunities as part of the experience that comes with representing Notre Dame.
“This isn’t something new to us. It’s a new environment and we haven’t played there before, but this is what we do. This is what Notre Dame does…That’s why we choose to come to Notre Dame. We love this! I love it! They love it! This is exactly why we’re at Notre Dame.”
Freeman’s comments conveyed his enthusiasm for competing in high-profile games and facing the challenges that accompany playing on the road.
The Irish will need to handle the atmosphere, communicate effectively and maintain their composure throughout the contest. The setting may be different from what the team experienced at home against Stanford, but the preparation and execution required to win remain the same.
For Freeman, competing in these environments is part of the responsibility and appeal of playing for Notre Dame.
The Road Ahead
Notre Dame’s win over Stanford featured strong offensive production, effective defensive play and valuable contributions from younger members of the roster. Freeman was pleased with the team’s overall performance, particularly its ability to protect the football, create takeaways and capitalize on opportunities.
However, the next assignment will demand a renewed focus.
The Irish must carry their momentum into another week of preparation, continue developing their depth and make sure their execution holds up in an unfamiliar road environment.
Freeman’s message following Stanford was one of satisfaction without complacency. Notre Dame accomplished plenty on Saturday, but the opportunity to build on that performance awaits against BYU.
